La retina tiene dos capas, la m\u00e1s externa es una capa pigmentada muy fina formada por una pel\u00edcula de una sola c\u00e9lula de grueso, colinda con la coroides y se extiende anteriormente para cubrir el cuerpo ciliar y la cara posterior del iris. Tiene tres funciones b\u00e1sicas, su color oscuro absorbe la luz para impedir la dispersi\u00f3n dentro del ojo; act\u00faa como fagocito (devorador de tejidos); y almacena vitamina A, que es necesaria para el trabajo de los fotoreceptores que se encuentran en la capa m\u00e1s interna.
